There has been a trend towards more open shelving in modern kitchens. As with any design element, there are pros and cons for both going with upper cabinets or the open shelving.

Open Shelving

Pros

  • Enlarges the feel of a small kitchen.
  • Versatile display area.
  • Ease of redecorating.

Cons

  • Requires dusting.
  • Less storage than cabinets.
  • Can become cluttered and unattractive.

Upper Cabinets

Pros

  • Creates a clean finished look.
  • Hides non-decorative storage.
  • Protects contents from dust and grease.

Cons

  • More expensive than shelving.
  • Can make a room feel smaller.
  • Top cabinet shelves may be difficult to access.

For a small tidy kitchen, open shelves can be a definite plus, giving it a more open feel. For maximum storage and easy maintenance, the upper cabinets are still your best choice. Ultimately, it is your lifestyle and the size of your kitchen that will determine which is the choice for you.

The classic white kitchen is truly a timeless choice that never loses its appeal. It is the versatility of the dominant white background that makes it so popular. White fits with any décor style or color scheme.

You can add bright splashes of color with floral prints and dinnerware to make a bright colorful kitchen that is full of energy. Not your style? Use black as your main accent color in the countertop or flooring, then choose a sharp highlight color, like red or green, and you’ve created a bold clean look.

White isn’t limited to bold accents. Pastel colors will soften the white and give a warm country kitchen look. A butcherblock wood top on a center island works well to add to that softer look. Hardwood flooring also provide a warm finish to a white kitchen.

Perhaps you like a clean modern look. Smooth white doors with stainless steel finishes on light fixtures and appliances can achieve this for you. Sleek lines and minimalist decorating will give a sheik elegance. White on white is another option. Texture, layers and glass doors can turn simple white into a flow of beauty.

When you make the statement, “I’d like a white kitchen”, it can conjure up any number of images, depending on your tastes in design. A simple tour through our gallery pictures will attest to that. Classic white kitchen? ALWAYS a good choice.

Combining your laundry and mudroom into one space is a great example of value driven design. It is one of the most practical choices for a dual function room. In order for any dual function room to work well, it requires some careful planning and organization. The first step in this planning process is to identify the activities that will take place in this room and the types of items that will be stored there.

Since it is a laundry room, there will obviously be a washer and dryer in the room that will require utility hookups. The size and type of appliances will also need to be considered, along with the best location in the floor plan. If you want to include ironing in the plan, a fold-down ironing board, concealed in a wall cabinet can be a good choice. You’ll also need to plan for storage cabinets for laundry supplies. Upper wall cabinets are often the choice for these items. It keeps them out of the reach of small children.

Once this is established, it is time to begin looking at the rest of the room and how it will be used. As a mudroom, a seating area for removing shoes and boots should be included. This can be a built-in bench with storage underneath, or it might be a piece of furniture. You’ll also want coat hooks or a closet for hanging jackets.

After these items are established it is time to look at storage for other items that you will want to access from the backyard. It may include things like children’s yard toys, gardening gloves and winter wear. Storage cabinets can help keep all these things organized and easy to find. Proper planning of your cabinet layout will keep your laundry/mudroom from becoming cluttered and make it one of the most functional rooms in your home.

Less is more? Less what? Less curves for one thing. Crisp clean lines define the new country kitchen look. Mission styled flat panel doors instead of raised panels. Square cut backsplashes and countertops and minimal cabinet molding, if any.

Open shelving and cubby holes give an old-world European feel to these kitchens. A combination of natural wood tones with earthy grays make good choices for the new country kitchen. And the finishes will be matt instead of glossy. Everything about this look speaks to practicality, but still has an urban flair to it.

To finish off the look, the pulls and drawer hardware will have simple functional styling and pewter will be a top choice for the finish. Glass doors, that are a standard in the traditional country kitchen, won’t be a part of this design scheme. Open shelving and cubby holes will be used instead to show off dishware and stainless steel cookware. These open air displays give an old-world European feel to these kitchens.

For sleek modern styling, that still has a rustic flair to it, the new country kitchen look will fit your tastes perfectly.

We’ve always bragged on the high quality of our products, now that consistently high quality has been independently certified.

The Canadian Kitchen Cabinet Association has established a certification program that provides testing of a manufacturer’s cabinets to help consumer’s identify consistent, top quality, Canadian made cabinets from lower quality imports.

Certification requires the submission of samples by the manufacturer to an independent testing laboratory. Rosehill submitted samples from all our cabinet lines for testing. The certification process involved testing the finish for durability and visual quality and testing drawers, shelves and doors for structural strength and integrity. The certification went beyond looking at Rosehill itself, and even verified that our suppliers of materials and hardware met their standards as well. The entire battery of testing and minimum standards required for certification can be found on the CKCA website.

ALL of Rosehill’s cabinet lines now carry CKCA certification. We are the only CKCA certified cabinet manufacturer in Manitoba, and one of only eight in all of Canada.

We have always taken pride in our product and our workmanship, and did not hesitate to submit our cabinets for certification. We had full confidence in the outcome. You don’t have to take our word for it; we have the certification that attests to the quality of our product and our customer’s testimonies, which we value even more.

Traditional closets are known for being space wasters. The standard closet is a narrow space along a wall. The narrow wall closet is a much more efficient use of your floor space than a walk-in closet, but it has several drawbacks.

Its major drawback is its accessibility. It is difficult to efficiently utilize the space in a typical closet because of the reach limitations that are created by the doorway. Generally, the ceiling height is a foot or more above the top of the door opening. Anything placed on shelving close to the ceiling requires careful maneuvering to put in place and remove. Because of this, the upper area of a closet is seldom utilized. It is wasted space.

The other drawback of the traditional wall closet is the negative impact that closet doors make on the overall look of a room. Bifold and sliding closet doors can distract from the beauty of a room, rather than enhance it.

Using custom closet cabinets to create your closet space can eliminate both of these issues. By using floor to ceiling cabinetry you can utilize every square foot of your entire wall space and still have easy access to every everything stored there. No wasted space near the ceiling. Each part of the wall area can be designed for maximum use of space. The use of floor to ceiling cabinetry also provides a beautiful wood finish that will increase the beauty and the value of any room.

Master bedroom suites have been transitioning over the years. Master baths are designed to provide both convenience and luxurious relaxation. Sitting areas are often times incorporated into the master suite to provide a reading area. The standard walk-in closet has also undergone a transition, from a place for clothes storage, to a room specifically designed as a dressing area.

The space committed to dressing areas is generally much larger than would have been allotted for simple closet space. One or two benches are usually incorporated in the room. Full length mirrors and makeup vanities can be part of the built-ins, as well.

Since a dressing area is all about preening in style, custom cabinetry designed to fit both the décor of the home, and the owner’s particular wardrobe, are an essential part of the equation. Dressing areas may have glass doors that show off the contents, or they may be elegant wood panels that provide a rich warm perimeter to the room.

The ability to provide the perfect space for each portion of a person’s wardrobe, from essentials to accessories, is another important part of the custom cabinetry that is incorporated into a dressing area. Organization, combined with beauty, creates a relaxing environment for beginning ones day.

When someone mentions their ‘centre island,’ it is easy to assume that they are talking about their kitchen. After all, where else would you find a centre island? How about in the dressing area of your master closet?

Centre islands are as popular in closet areas as they are in the kitchen, for some of the same reasons. They utilize the centre of the room for additional storage space and they provide a work area that is reachable from the entire perimeter of cabinets.

Centre islands provide that space to layout your clothes prior to dressing. The drawers underneath can replace dresser space that would have taken up additional area in the bedroom itself. Others have used the centre islands for their linen storage area. Incorporating a bench onto the end of a centre island can provide a great seating area for putting on socks and shoes.

Centre islands in kitchen are utilized in a variety of ways, depending on the preferences of the homeowner. As the centre island begins to become a standard feature in closet dressing areas, we are certain to see their usefulness being demonstrated in new and creative ways.
